Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course taught in French is to give a systematic overview of the most important trends and personalities of the French literature from the oldest times to the eighteenth century. When completing this cycle, a student should have basic knowledge of the French literature of this period, should know its development and special national features, and be able to incorporate it into a broader European or world context. The eminars will lead students to a deeper analysis of texts and extracts of the most important works of the period.

The earliest French literature, ?chansons de geste?
Courtly literature (lyric poetry and the novel)
A realistic and satirical literature 12th and 13 century (Le Roman de Renard, fablely, Le Roman de la Rose
Medieval poetry (Villon) and the Medieval Theatre
Renaissance humanism, the main leaders of French literature 16th century
The definition of ?humanism? and its insertion into the specifics of the French historical context
Early stages of humanism (Rabelais) and his skeptical conclusion (Montaignově in philosophy)
Contemporary Poetry (Du Bellay, Ronsard) and the issue of language, which gradually begins to emerge from the still prevailing context of Latin
The works of French artists set in the wider European framework and compared with contemporary foreign production (Desiderius Erasmus, Pico della Mirandola, Thomas More, etc.).
Classicism, classical aesthetics, which completely dominated the seventeenth century French royal court, from where it spread further into Europe
Assessment of the extent to which French classicism actually required based on the general principles of Aristotle's Poetics and how it exceeds the other hand (see Malherbe, Boileau)
How Some time greats (Corneille, Moliere, Racine) and respect the other hand cleverly skirted the rules of classical individual (unity of place, time and matter, the principle of probability, etc.)
French philosophy and literature of the eighteenth century - the elements of enlightened discourse still affecting the French mentality, the undisputed benefits but also many pitfalls to this philosophical direction
Early Enlightenment (Montesquieu, Voltaire), the so-called second generation (Diderot), subsequent critical reaction foreshadowing Romanticism (Rousseau)
Enlightenment ideas on the functioning of the state, bringing the individual or the role of religion in society (still debated secularism)
