Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the institutional structure and functioning of democratic political systems. Within the course political systems representing basic models of democratic systems will be presented in a comparative perspective. After the initial introduction of the concept of the political system and basic classifications and typologies of democratic political systems, students will be acquainted with political developments, constitutional arrangements and party systems of political systems of the United States of America, the French Republic, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland , the Federal Republic of Germany and the Swiss Confederation. At the end of the course the most important trends in contemporary democratic political systems will be discussed. The seminars will outline current issues and problems associated with the operation of the above-mentioned political systems (electoral processes, changes of party systems and systems of interest intermediation, decentralization processes, etc.).

Requirements on student
|
Students regularly read assigned texts in Czech and foreign languages and prepare assignments on a regular basis. The assignments are in the form of oral presentations or texts; this will be arranged by mutual agreement between lecturer and students. Assignments will be evaluated by lecturer. Presentation generally lasts about 10 - 20 minutes, standard length of papers is 10 - 20 standard pages (1800 characters with spaces per page).
