Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course is to analyze deeply two negative social phenomena, anti-Semitism and islamophobia. The course makes students familiar with origins of anti-Judaism in Christian theology and basic anti-Jewish "myths", anti-Judaism in economy and beginning of usury in early modern societies from the end of Middle Ages till the end of 18th century, with first political manifestations of anti-Judaism, changes in 19th and in first half of 20th century (assimilation, nationalism and secular anti-Judaism) with regard to some specific manifestations in Germany, France, in middle and eastern Europe, with development in Hitler?s "Third empire" (influences of classical anti-Judaism on "final-solution" and Holocaust), in SSSR and satellite states (origin of "communists" anti-Zionism), present societies in Europe and in Middle Eastern and problem of Israel. Also the course deals with origins and development of the phenomenon of islamophobia, with its definitions, main features, with scholarly grasp of the theme, with debates on its general character and manifestations, with actual manifestations of the phenomenon especially in the European countries including Czech Republic.

To end this course student have to pass oral exam. To enter oral exam student must meet condition of presentation of chosen text in seminar.

Content
|
1. Definition of anti-Judaism/anti-Semitism, general conditions of its development and general manifestations. Formation of anti-Judaism in early Christian societies and its development in period of high Middle Ages.
2. Christian theology and basic "myths" against Jews. Medieval anti-Judaism in economy, origins of usury.
3. Forms and manifestations of anti-Judaism from high Middle Ages till the end of 18th century.
4. Assimilation, nationalism and secular anti-Semitism.
5. Modern anti-Semitism in Germany and France.
6. Modern anti-Semitism in middle and Eastern Europe.
7. "Final solution" and the phenomenon of Holocaust.
8. From anti-Semitism to anti-Zionism: Jews in politics of SSSR and satellite states, Israel in politics of Arab countries and western Europe.
9. Contemporary manifestations of anti-Semitism in Czech media and in politics.

Learning outcomes
|
Knowledge - knowledge resulting from the course: |
Students are able to distinguish between partial forms of anti-Judaism, anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism and understand its context in frame of totalitarian ideologies. They have overview of history, meanings and connections of various forms of anti-Semitism and of its survival until present time. Students define terms of anti-Semitism, anti-Judaism and anti-Zionism. They describe the origin of term anti-Semitism and will compare the ways it was used in 19th century and in present time. They evaluate the meaning of anti-Judaism in frame of Christian faith for the development of racial anti-Semitism in 19th century. They analyze the position of anti-Semitism in ideologies of European nationalism and will identify ideological resources of secular anti-Semitism. They explain the progress of most known anti-Semitic incidents of the end of 19th century and of the beginning of 20th century and evaluate their impact on later development. Students analyze also actual anti-Semitic incidents and discuss possible backgrounds and motives. They reflect events of Holocaust and put them into the general historical context. Students discuss present situation of anti-Zionism and its relationship to anti-Semitism. They reflect use of anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism as a propagandistic weapon in Middle Eastern conflict. Students also describe origins both the concept and the very phenomenon of Islamphobia. They define the concept and analyze its weak points and explain character of the phenomenon. They know various manifestations of the phenomenon especially in European countries including Czech Republic. They are able to identify and to analyze islamophobic expressions or attitudes. |
