1. Introduction to the Course: From Prehistoric Origins to the Civilizations of Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The Development of Visual Language and Symbolic Systems in the Earliest Cultures. 2. Art of the Aegean Region and Ancient Greece: From Minoan Aesthetics to the Ideal of Classical Harmony and the Dramatic Expression of Hellenism. 3. Art of Ancient Rome: from the Etruscan funerary tradition to the visual propaganda of the empire. 4. Early Christian and Byzantine art, Pre-Romanesque and Romanesque Europe: the transformation of the ancient heritage into a medieval visual language. 5. Great Moravia and Romanesque art in the Czech lands: local traditions between the Byzantine and Western cultural spheres. 6. Gothic art in Europe: spiritual symbolism of the High Middle Ages. 7. The Czech lands as a center of Central European Gothic art. 8. The emergence and development of the Renaissance in Italy: a shift in the conception of humanity and space. 9. The Renaissance and Mannerism in the Alps and the Czech Lands: the transmission of ideals, regional adaptations, and court culture. 10. Baroque, Baroque Classicism, and Rococo in Europe. 11. The Baroque in the Czech Lands. 12. Neoclassicism and Empire style, Romanticism: from a return to antiquity to the discovery of subjectivity and nature. 13. Realism: the objectification of reality and social analysis of the modern world.
