Main topics: 1.Defining anthropology: its relationship to other academic disciplines; subdisciplines of anthropology; ethnology and ethnography. 2.Frameworks and methods: anthropology as a holistic discipline concerned with human variability; genes-environment-population. 3.The brain and the body: neuroendocrine and psychophysiological pathways to behaviour. 4.Development and plasticity: psychology within an adaptive and evolutionary framework; epigenetics, early environment, and life history. 5.Bioculture: the intersection of biological and cultural determinants; culture as both a selective and developmental environment; ethical boundaries. 6.Culture: cultural relativism versus ethnocentrism; the emic versus etic distinction; the problem of cultural universals. 7.Cultural transmission and cultural change: forms of cultural transmission; cultural hybridisation, glocalisation, and appropriation. 8.The embodiment of culture: the concept of embodiment; the relationship between the body and cultural symbols; culture, illness, and health. 9.Field research: ethnography and participant observation; comparison; neutrality versus engagement; research ethics. 10.Culture and personality: configurationalism; cultural patterns; the relationship between sex/gender and temperament; enculturation. 11.Culture and language: the concept of the sign; the structure of language; linguistic classification of the world; the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. 12.Culture and cognition: anthropological approaches to knowledge; worldview; ontological pluralism. 13.Culture and religion: traditional and new religious forms; the role of spirituality in education, psychology, and therapy.
