Course content
Lectures 1. General introduction - definition of gerontology, geriatrics, old age, aging, aging process, age distribution. 2. Characteristics of senior population, principles of healthy aging. 3. Physical manifestations of aging, mental manifestations of aging, adaptation, biological and psychological age. 4. Pathophysiological changes in old age, geriatric risk, geriatric syndromes. 5. Specific features of diseases and peculiarities of clinical picture in old age, polymorbidity. Pharmacotherapy in old age. 6. Principles of communication with geriatric patient. 7. Health and social services for seniors in the Czech Republic. 8. Palliative care system for the elderly in the Czech Republic. 9. Patient care strategy for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. 10. Care strategy for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis patients. Exercises 1. Introduction to the subject. Assignment of seminar papers. Specifics of nursing care in geriatrics. 2. Excursion to the Hospice of Sts. Lazarus in Pilsen. 3. Nursing care for the elderly in an emergency care environment. 4. Excursion Senior Residence Terrace. 5. Dying and death, palliative care for the elderly. 6. Presentation of students' seminar papers. 7. Presentation of seminar papers of students. 8. Presentation of students' seminar papers. 9. Presentation of students' seminar papers. 10. Evaluation of subject, granting credit

Learning activities and teaching methods
  • Contact hours - 30 hours per semester
