Course content
The aim of this seminar is to develop skills which allow students to critically explore their own culture from the outside. The seminar will also introduce basic writing techniques (which will be developed in later courses). At the outset, students will concentrate on reviews of Czech hotels and restaurants in online guides, such as TripAdvisor. This will be followed by analysis of several Czech traditions from a foreigner's viewpoint, using memoirs and online articles. We will also look at cases where Czech culture has travelled beyond the bounds of the state to influence other countries' cultures, adapting itself in the proces (for instance, The Kolache Factory in Texas, the designer Ladislav Sutnar in New York, "Škoda lásky/Roll Out the Barrel", Czech literature in translation).
