Course content
The seminar will begin with the study of George Orwell's, "Politics and the English Language" (1946), "Boys' Weeklies" (1940) a Raymond Williams' Key Words: A Vocabulary of Culture and Society (1976). The course is based on ideas of cultural and stylistic analysis, and the exploration of different ways that the anglophone media present and broadcasts information.

  • Contact hours - 22 hours per semester
  • Preparation for formative assessments (2-20) - 10 hours per semester
  • Presentation preparation (report in a foreign language) (10-15) - 15 hours per semester
  • Graduate study programme term essay (40-50) - 30 hours per semester

Knowledge
students will know about: - key representations of Czechs and their land in anglophone literature during the 20th century - the dynamics of cultural interaction (e.g., stereotyping, projection, prejudice)
Skills
Before they begin the course, students should be able to: - view their own culture through the eyes of foreigners - write their own texts from such a foreign viewpoint - master a range of writing registers in English

Knowledge
After completing the subject, students will know about - the main variations of global English - debates about Standard English - the history and contemporary contexts of some of these - the main themes and dynamics of the anglophone global media
Skills
After completing the subject, students will be able to - identify some variations of global English - analyze the political and cultural background of some aspects of anglophone media (for instance advertising, regulation)
