Course content
This seminar draws on several theoretical areas - linguistics, sociology and anthropology - which deal with the rules and tendencies of human behaviour. Among the theoretical texts we will be dealing with are: Brown and Levinson, Politeness Theory; Steven Pinker, Language as a Window to Human Thought; and Ang Soon and Linn Van Dyne, Cultural Intelligence. Students will apply these concepts to cases taken from the work of David Livermore. Some of the key concepts are: Drive, Knowledge, Strategy, Action, that will give students a practical rubric for analyzing and improving their own facility with intercultural exchange as well as practical mastery of English as a Global Language. Each week students will analyze one case of intercultural intelligence, first between English and Czech, and then with other cultures which come into contact with the anglophone world.
