Course content
One of the newest trends in literary criticism of the last few decades is concerned with immigrant culture and its central position in American and British literature. In contrast with previous ideas that novels, poems and plays originate from pure national sources, contemporary cultural criticism explores routes not roots (as James Clifford puns). In the seminar students will follow the various paths of immigrants into anglophone society and track how these writers engage with the new culture. They come from Eastern Europe, as well as more distant continents. Students will be able to apply the skills gained in the seminar Intercultural Intelligence as they work on particular literary texts, films and documentaries. Further, they will learn about the various barriers and problems (including their solutions) in intercultural communication, which foreigners encounter in anglophone culture.
