Course content
|
The course introduces students to the evidence of archaeological sources from the early Slavic period as well as the Old and Middle Hillfort Period (6 - 10th century), their use intended to obtain knowledge of the life of early Medieval society and its various aspects (settlement, burial, economics, ritual/religion). The evidence of archaeological heritage is compared with the historical development as reflected in written sources. Increased attention is paid to the results of some extensive field projects (e.g. the Great Moravian hillforts, the Přemyslid domain and its archaeological manifestations), the reconstruction of the natural environment or the results of non-destructive survey (aerial survey). A part of the course is implemented in the form of a supervised independent assignment of the students, who will elaborate and defend a seminar paper on a selected topic. In the seminars, students will gain knowledge of the artefacts of the given period on the basis of the study of a comparative collection and a pictorial database of artefacts.
