The examination is oral, takes place before a committee, and usually lasts about 30 minutes. It consists of the student's defense of the thesis proposals submitted for their dissertation. In the theses, students primarily define the basic methods of their research, the current state of knowledge regarding the researched topic, and the objectives of the dissertation; the binding structure of the thesis theses is established by the faculty's internal regulations. The actual procedure and other requirements are set forth in the Study and Examination Regulations of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. A separate part of the thesis defense is an examination on the theoretical foundations related to the content of the doctoral program. The format and procedure of the examination on theoretical foundations are determined by the supervising department, and the student consults on their preparation with the program guarantor and their supervisor.
