Course content
The course is intended to acquaint the students with the testimony of archaeological sources of the Early and Late Iron Age (Hallstatt and La T?ne periods and the Roman period), and their use for knowing the life of the then society and its various aspects (settlement, burial, economics, ritual/religion) as manifested through archaeological sources (artefacts and ecofacts). In the seminars, students will gain knowledge of the artefacts of the given period on the basis of the study of a comparative collection and a pictorial database of artefacts. The lecture focuses on detailed familiarization with archaeological sources for this period: bronze and iron artefacts (including the corresponding technologies of obtaining iron and its forming), with ornaments, especially pottery, including its technology and decoration. Attention is paid to dwellings and ritual behaviour (fortifications including the so-called La T?ne oppida, skeletal and cremation burial rite). Students are informed about these system of obtaining food (keeping of domestic animals and growing crops). The student are provided with the basic instruction on the social systems (trade and its recognition in archaeological sources) and the symbolism of this period. The oldest written sources on this period are mentioned. The lectures are based on the archaeology of the Czech Republic with extensive excursions into the wider surroundings. The part of the course devoted to the Roman period follows, in addition to the territory of the Czech Republic, also the aspects of life in the part of (Central) Europe that was situated outside the Roman Empire (the so-called Barbaricum) and, in contrast to this, follows the archaeological manifestations of an advanced civilization of the Roman world on its border with Barbaricum. A part of the course can be implemented in the form of a supervised independent work of the students, who will elaborate and defend a seminar paper on the selected issue related to the Iron Age and the Roman period in the Europe-wide (especially Central European) context.
