Course content
Thematic areas: 1. Hill forts and castles from the 6th to 12th century in Europe. 2. The issue of castle towers in the High Middle Ages. 3. Living units of Czech castles and their manifestations in material culture. 4. Rock castles and issues connected to them. 5. Types of castle layout and connected issues.

Learning activities and teaching methods
  • Individual project (40) - 44 hours per semester
  • Preparation for an examination (30-60) - 60 hours per semester
  • Contact hours - 26 hours per semester

Knowledge
Students have a grasp of archaeological theory and methodology (MA level).
Skills
Students understand scientific text in Czech and English and are able to interpret and critically assess its content. Students know how to utilize electronic information resources. Students are capable of working systematically and independently. Students are capable of formally presenting their research and leading scientific discussions.
learning outcomes
Knowledge
Students are acquainted with the role of fortified settlements in early- and high-medieval settlement structures. They are well-versed in the individual elements of castle structures and have an overview of the forms and development of fortified sites in a wider context.
Skills
Students are capable of interpreting the individual parts of fortified sites and reconstructing the role of fortified settlements in terms of various settlement structures.
