Course content
Lectures 1. Basic mechanisms of endocrine regulation - Integration systems of the organism - Endocrine glands and an overview of individual hormones and their functions 2. Hormonal regulation of metabolic processes - Intermediate metabolism - Homeostasis 3. Thyroid gland I - Anatomical data - Formation and secretion of thyroid hormones - Transport and metabolism of thyroid hormones 4. Thyroid gland II - Effects of thyroid hormones - Clinical manifestations - Laboratory tests of the thyroid gland: interpretation and indications 5. Endocrine function of the pancreas - The structure of the cells of the islets of Langerhans - Insulin biosynthesis and secretion - Laboratory analyses 6. Regulation of carbohydrate metabolism - Effects of insulin and its mechanism - Glucagon - Hypoglycemia and diabetes mellitus 7. Adrenal medulla - Morphology of the adrenal glands - Adrenal medulla: structure and function of medullary hormones 8. Adrenal cortex - Adrenal cortex: structure of adrenocortical hormones - Effects of glucocorticoids, cortisol secretion - Effects of mineralocorticoids, aldosterone secretion - Laboratory examination for disorders of adrenal hormone metabolism 9. Hormonal control of calcium metabolism - Metabolism of calcium and phosphorus - Vitamin D - Parathyroid glands - Calcitonin - Laboratory examination of bone metabolism 10. Pituitary gland - Morphology and distribution of hormones secreted by the pituitary system - Middle lobe hormones - Growth hormone and growth physiology - Hormones of the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland: oxytocin, vasopressin 11. Gonads - Male reproductive system: secretion of sex hormones - Female reproductive system: secretion of sex hormones - Menstrual cycle-hormonal regulation 12. Endocrine function of kidneys and heart - Renin-angiotensin system - Erythropoietin - Heart hormones 13.
