Course content
1) The linguistic situation in Mesopotamia; relation between Akkadian and Sumerian; main features of the grammatical structure of Akkadian, its position within the Semitic family; periodisation of the development of Akkadian; basic sources of information for the study of Akkadian 2) Main groups of texts in Akkadian (inscriptions, economic and administrative texts, judicial texts, correspondence, special texts, myths, epic literature) 3) Introduction into the cuneiform script; types of graphemes (logograms and syllabograms); monumental and cursive srcipt 4) Introduction into the Akkadian phonology; vocals and consonants; phonetic changes; possibilities of reconstructing the Akkadian phonology 5) Word classes in Akkadian; root and stem; basic principles of Akkadian morphology 6) Substantives and their flexion; gender 7) Substantives and their flexion; number 8) Substantives and their flexion; case 9) Status rectus and status constructus; their construction and use 10) Adjectives and their flexion; gender 11) Adjectives and their flexion; number 12) Adjectives and their flexion; case 13) Relation between substantives and adjectives

learning outcomes
The students will know and use the available sources for the study of Akkadian. They are acquainted with the basic abbreviations and terminology used in the scientific literature. They are able to read and translate words and short sentences in Akkadian. They know the rules for the writing and use of the cuneiform script. They use the basic set of the graphemes of the monumental cuneiform script. They know the rules for the flexion of substantives and adjectives.
