Course content
1. The state units of southern Mesopotamia in the 3rd millennium BCE 2. Old Babylonian period 3. Middle Babylonian period 4. Neo-Babylonian period - Chaldean Dynasty 5. The role of the king and royal ideology 6. The state administration 7. The economic structure 8. The building industry 9. Art and craft 10. Babylonian laws 11. The highest deity and Babylonian pantheon 12. Babylonian cultic calendar and the most important festivals 13. Babylonian literature

learning outcomes
Student interprets the history of ancient Mesopotamia through the prism of the history of Babylonia, and he evaluates the role of the state units of southern Mesopotamia for the history of the ancient Near East. He identifies distinctive features of government, allocation of powers, the royal ideology and religious life in particular periods of Babylonian history, and he links it to the overall context of the history of the Near East. He will be able to evaluate the nature and content of Babylonian laws and compare them with other known legal texts of the ancient Near East.
