Course content

1) Opening lesson. Overview of literature to theme of middle eastern cinematography. Assignment of selected Turkish, Syrian, Lebanese, Jordanian and Iraqi movies for critiques. 2) Turkish cinematography. Specific features of Turkish cinematography. Main topics that Turkish cinematography is paying attention to. Overview of the Turkish cinematography development from its beginnings until the half of 70´s of 20th century. 3) Development of Turkish cinematography from the second half of 70´s until the end of 80´s of 20th century. Important movies and personalities of Turkish cinematography of this period. 4) Turkish cinematography from 90´s of 20th century. Important personalities of contemporary Turkish cinematography. 5) Syrian cinematography from its beginnings until 1970. Important movies and personalities of Syrian cinematography of this period. 6) Syrian cinematography from 1970 until the present day. Important movies and personalities of contemporary Syrian cinematography. 7) Lebanese cinematography from its beginnings until 1975. Important movies and personalities of Lebanese cinematography of this period. 8) Lebanese cinematography from 1975 until the present day. Important movies and personalities of contemporary Lebanese cinematography. 9) Jordanian cinematography from its beginnings until the end of 80´s of 20th century. Important movies and personalities of Jordanian cinematography of this period. 10) Jordanian cinematography from 90´s of 20th century. Important movies and personalities of contemporary Jordanian cinematography. 11) Iraqi cinematography from its beginnings until the present day. Important movies and personalities of Iraqi cinematography. 12) Cinematography of Arabian Peninsula countries. Important movies and personalities of these cinematographies. 13) Evaluation of submitted critiques and discussion about selected movies from Turkish, Syrian, Lebanese, Jordanian and Iraqi cinematography.

Students know the most important authors and movies of Turkish, Syrian, Lebanese, Jordanian and Iraqi cinematography. They criticize selected movies, set story of chosen movies into contemporary context, interpret symbolism and message of selected movies. Students identify used vehicles of expression and explain their meaning. They make comparison of middle eastern movies with movies from another regions and explain their specific features. |
