Course content
1. Languages and nations of the ancient Near East 2. Discovering of written evidence of the Near East 3. Decryption of ancient Near Eastern scripts and languages 4. Sumerian pantheon and mythology 5. Akkadian pantheon and mythology 6. Canaanite pantheon and mythology 7. Hittite pantheon and mythology 8. Epical texts 9. Oracles and magic - the official and personal piety 10. Conceptions of the underworld and the cult of ancestors 11. Songs, hymns and cultic compositions 12. Temples and priests 13. Cultic year and major festivals

Course requires no special prior knowledge and skills.
learning outcomes
Student is able to identify and characterize particular languages of the ancient Near East. He identifies the most important Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittite and Canaanite deities, and he paraphrases and interprets the content of the most important mythological, epic and cultic texts. He also compares the particular phenomena of religious life in different cultures of the ancient Near East and outlines the course of the most important religious ceremonies.
