Course content
1. Traction drive - properties, arrangement, torque transmission. Traction machine placement and suspension. Vehicle interaction with surroundings. 2. Features and control of DC serial motor, vehicles with serial traction machines for DC traction systems. 3. Vehicles with serial traction machines for AC traction systems - wiring, control, infrastructure interference. 4. Vehicles with DC traction machine with separated excitation - wiring, regulation, input filter design, infrastructure interference. 5. Voltage source inverter on the vehicle, resistive and regenerative braking, higher harmonics in the machine and in the catenary, input filter, typical schemes of vehicles powered from DC traction systems with different voltage levels. 6. Conceptions of contemporary traction drives, wheel drives. 7. Input converters for vehicles with AC traction motors. Active rectifier and its properties, higher harmonic on AC side, resonance filter, power factor. 8. Multi-system, hybrid, battery and special vehicles, vehicles with combustion engine and electric power transmission. 9. Wiring and control of auxiliary drives, sources of auxiliary power on vehicles. Traction, auxiliary and control devices backup. Cooling. 10. Slip characteristics. Influence of vehicle construction on its adhesion properties. Adhesion measurement and modeling. 11. Electric braking to constant and regulated resistor, basic schemes of vehicles for regenerative braking, independent brake. Electrodynamical and mechanical braking, basic types of vehicle brakes. Pneumatic brakes for rail vehicles and their electrical control, mechanical traction brakes, braking preferences and brakes cooperation. 12. Control of vehicles, main controlled and control quantities and typical requirements for control on particular types of vehicles. Target braking, jerk. Traction voltage oscillations, pantograph bounce, icing. 13. Communications on vehicle, HW and SW requirements, ETCS.
