Course content
Lectures 1. Composition of blood and its functions. Blood groups and blood transfusions. Erythrocytes - function, destruction, sedimentation, hematocrit. Hemostasis. Hemocoagulation. Fibrinolytic system. 2. - 3. Heart - storage, structure of the wall, blood vessels and nerves of the heart. Cardiac conduction system. Cardiac cycle. Cardiac output and its regulation. External manifestations of cardiac activity. EKG. 4. Distribution of blood circulations. Hemodynamics and management. Pressure gradient. Blood pressure. 5. Overview of arteries. 6. Overview of veins. 7. Lymphatic system - anatomical structure and function. Microcirculation and the exchange of substances between the bloodstream and tissues, the formation of lymph. Spleen. Innate and acquired immunity. The principle of vaccination. 8. - 9. Anatomy and physiology of the digestive tract. Salivary glands, liver and pancreas. Peristalsis. Enzymes. 10. - 11. Anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system. Upper and lower respiratory tract. Paranasal sinuses. Lungs and pleura. Pneumothorax. Pulmonary ventilation. Gas exchange in the lungs and tissues. Transport of gases by blood. Regulation of breathing. Hypoxia. 12. Anatomy and physiology of excretion - anatomical structure of kidneys, glomerular filtration, tubular processes, management of kidney functions, acid-base balance, upper and lower urinary tract. 13. Anatomy and physiology of the male reproductive system. 14. Anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system. Ovarian and menstrual cycle. Pregnancy. Lactation. 15. Endocrine system - distribution of hormones, hypothalamo-pituitary system, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, islets of Langerhans of the pancreas, calcium metabolism.
