Course content
The origins of philosophy. Mythos and logos. An investigation into the nature. Ionian and Italian branches of philofophy. Milesians. Pythagoreans, Xenophanes, Heraclitus, Parmenides and the Eleans. Empedocles and Anaxagoras. The Atomists. The Sophists and Socrates. Plato. Aristotle: logic, first philosophy, physics, ethics, politics. Hellenism: Stoicism, Epicureism, Scepticism. Neoplatonism. Patristics - basic tendency, the problem of universals. The influence of aristotelism. Thomas Aquinas. The late scholasticism and the nominalism: Scotus, Ockham, Nicolas of Cusa.

learning outcomes
Students will be competent to orientate themselves in the basic problems of the ancient and mediteval philosophy. Thanks to the critical reading of the original sources they will be able to identify partial tendences established during the history of the western thinking into the respective philosophical systems. This knowledge will provide them with understanding of the whole process of formation of the European philosophical discursus within its vast spectrum of influences, which is necessary for further study of philosophy.
