Course content
Topics discussed: Definition of the subject of aesthetics. Archaic period of ancient aesthetics. Plato's thinking on beauty and art. Aristotle's aesthetic views, the difference between Plato´s and Aristotle´s approach. Hellenistic aesthetics; Plotinos´s views on beauty and art. Medieval aesthetics, Augustine's aesthetics, aesthetics of Thomas Aquinas. Aesthetics of the Renaissance, Alberti's aesthetics. Classicist aesthetics; Boileau´s aesthetic views. English school of taste, Hutcheson, Hume, Burke. French 18th century aesthetics , Diderot, Dubos, Rouseau. German Enlightenment in aesthetics, Winckelmann, Lessing. German classical aesthetics, Kant, Hegel. Overview of the 19th century aesthetics: formalist, psychological, biological and sociological aesthetics. Overview of aesthetic streams of the 20th century: analytic aesthetics, phenomenology, structuralism.

learning outcomes
Students will be able to summarize the development of the aesthetic thought from antiquity to the present. The will be able to characterize the most important periods in the history of aesthetics and the key concepts of the most important aestheticians as well.
