Course content
1. Definition of the subject of aesthetics. Archaic period of ancient aesthetics 2. Plato's thinking about beauty and art 3. Aristotle's aesthetic views, the difference between Plato's and Aristotle's approach 4. Hellenistic aesthetics; Plotin's views on beauty and art 5. Overview of medieval aesthetics; Augustine's aesthetics, the aesthetics of Thomas Aquinas 6. Overview of Renaissance aesthetics; Alberti's aesthetics 7. Overview of classicist aesthetics; Boileau's aesthetic views 8. English Taste School; Hutcheson, Hume, Burke 9. French aesthetics of the 18th century; Diderot, Dubos, Rousseau 10. German Enlightenment in aesthetics; Winckelmann, Lessing. German classical aesthetics; Kant, Hegel 11. Overview of aesthetics of the 19th century: formalistic, psychological, biological and sociological aesthetics 12. Overview of aesthetic directions of the 20th century: analytical aesthetics, phenomenology, structuralism 13. Important concepts of contemporary aesthetics.
