Resolution of "painting" and "image" in Edmund Husserl and Roman Ingarden. Ingarden´s concept of the work of fine art. Heidegger's conception of the work of art as a revelation of being. Merleau-Ponty´s concept of disclosure of truth in the work of fine art. Patočka´s concept of the artwork. The problem of abstract painting. Sociological approaches to art history: Benjamin's conception of the relationship between art development and reproductive techniques, Francastel's exploration of relationship between society and imaging modalities in the visual arts, Gehlen's conception of "layers of meaning" of work of art in relation to the problem of idiomatic development.

Students will attempt to answer the basic questions the ontology of work of fine art: What is art? What makes art art? They will be able to analyse and compare various philosophical theories of the key philosophers of art of the 20th century. They learn to work with philosophical texts of important authors. |
