Course content
1. Introduction to the subject: methods of art research and basic information sources. 2. Art history as the history of style: the development of the concepts of "style" and "manner." The history of style in early modern art theory. 3. Art history as the history of style: the concepts of "style" and "stylistic development" in art theory in the 19th and first half of the 20th century. 4. The concept of art schools using selected topics from the history of painting as examples. 5. The individual style of an artist using selected topics from the history of fine arts as examples. 6. The content and meaning of a work of art: basic research methods (iconographic method, iconology of a work of art, sociocultural interpretation). 7. Introduction to ancient iconography: basic themes, iconographic motifs and their interpretation, with an emphasis on early modern art. 8. Introduction to Christian iconography: basic themes, iconographic motifs and their interpretation. Layers of meaning in medieval images. 9. How to interpret modern works of art? 10. Applied art history and interdisciplinarity in sculpture and painting research: artistic artifacts as part of cultural heritage, practical examples of interconnecting approaches in the humanities to the protection of works of art. 11. The contribution of natural sciences to the understanding of works of art: historical and methodological introduction, classification of natural science research methods, and basic terminology. 12. The contribution of natural sciences to the understanding of works of art: non-invasive and invasive methods of researching works of art - basic procedures and principles, examples of the application of natural science methods. 13. Excursion to Prague: selected exhibitions at the National Gallery.

to describe and interpret the work of art (especially so-called old European art) on the basis of its contemporary interpretation, and clarify the differences of its interpretation from the current state of art-historical and cultural-historical knowledge

to evaluate individual works of early modern art from the viewpoint of the period intellectual context of discussion of art, to identify, formulate and explain the main ideas of Renaissance art theory that could influence them
