Course content
Baroque affect theory. The spiritual dimension of the music of L. van Beethoven and F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. 19th Century Program Music: Liszt and the Origin of a Symphonic Poem, Smetana's My Homeland. Wagner and Schopenhauer. Death in the works of G. Mahler and R. Strauss. Neofolklorism, expressiveness and the power of the story in Janáček's work. Expressiveness of D. Shostakovich (Shostakovich and besieged Leningrad) and Schönberg. Philip Glass and minimalism and the principle of satyagraha. Modern compositional styles, sonic music. Some non-European music cultures and their specifics.
