Course content
Content: 1. Professionalization of literary culture in the Renaissance, Elizabethan poetic concepts, ancient patterns in English Renaissance poetics. 2. Philip Sidney; defense of poetry in the context of English Renaissance knowledge and European debates, E. Spenser, G. Puttenham, B. Jonson. 3. The intellectual circle in Renaissance literary culture and the legacy of Philipp Sidney: Robert Sidney, Mary Wroth. 4. French academies of the 17th century; the growing prestige of artistic disciplines cultivated in academies. A. Du Fresnoy, A. Félibien, N. Poussin. 5. The dispute between the old and the modern. Ch. Perault; the influence of the concept ut pictura poesis: comparing the abilities of painting and poetry in the reflections of the 16th and 17th centuries. 6. Reflections on beauty and the establishment of a system of fine arts in the first half of the 18th century in France, Ch. Batteux, J.-B. Dubos; reflections on art in French encyclopedists. 7. Denis Diderot, Jean Baptiste Le Rond d'Alembert, the influence of the Encyclopedia in matters of theoretical grasp of art. 8. The Influence of the Controversy Between the Old and the Modern in the English cultural milieu of the early 18th Century, by W. Wotton. The topic of beautiful and elegant art in 18th century England, by J. Harris. 9. Origin and position of aesthetics in Germany in the second half of the 18th century. A. G. Baumgarten; system of fine arts in the reflections of German thinkers of the 18th century, M. Mendelssohn, J. G. Sulzer. 10. Fine arts and reflections on beautiful sciences, rejection of the concept of beautiful sciences by I. Kant. 11. Historical overview of the care of monuments in the 17th and 18th centuries: the monument as a part of social representation. 12. Modern scientific foundations of museology and monument care, institutionalization of monument care and the first legislative regulations, the first public museums in Europe.
