Course content
1. Origin of the Russian nation. Kievan Rus? origin, its religious, cultural and political development. Russian bylina, folklore. Christening of Rus?. origin and development of literature. First literal relics. 2. Culturally-historical development after dissolution of the Kievan Rus?. Feudal fractionalism (12th-13th century). Novgorod republic, Vladimir-Suzdal Rus?. Novgorod March documents. Foreign conquerors (The Tale of Igor?s Campaign). Defend of Ryazan. Conquest of Rus? - Tatars and Mongolians. 3. Foundation of Russian centralized state, overthrow of Tatar and Mongolian yoke. Battle of Kulikovo. Dmitry Donskoy. Moscow Rus? culture (14th-15th century). Construction of Moscow. Architecture, art, murals and icons. Theophanes the Greek, Anderi Rublev. Depiction of breakthrough historical events in chronicles and literary relics. 4. Russia in the 16th century. Culturally-historical development during the rule of Peter the Great. Social reforms. Reflection of Peter the Great in art. Peasants? war under the leadership of the Don Cossack Yemelyan Pugachev. 7. Russian political system during the rule of Catherine the Great and Paul I. of Russia. Influence of French Enlightment ideas in Russia. Significant personalities of the 18th century ( Lomonosov, Karamzin, Radishchev). Science development, Moscow university foundation. 8. Patronage tradition and its importance. Russian maecenas?. Paul and Sergei Tretyakov; S.T. Morozov; S.I. Mamontov, Peter, Sergei and Dmitry Shchukin. Russian artists? works in Czech museums. 9. Russian folklore, genres, characteristics. Songs, chastuhski, proverbs, fairy tales. Traditional rituals. Folk art. Matryoshka doll, samovar, Chochloma, Palech, laces, porcelain, ceramics etc. 10. Czech-Russian contacts in different fields of culture. Literature, music, ballet, art, education. 11. Russian museums, galleries. Hermitage Museum. State Tretyakov Gallery. Wooden architecture in the Kizhi Insel. 12. Russian emigration in Bohemia after 1917. Further waves of Russian emigration. Russian diaspora in the Czech Republic.

Knowledge
Students' knowledge of Russian language is of B2 level (CEFR).
learning outcomes
Students are able to identify the basic periods of Russian history, to orient themselves in historical development of Russian state as well as in development of Russian culture and to evaluate importance of particular events. Students are able to understand texts of given thematic content and to interpret their content. They are also able to prepare and present independently a paper on a given topic (in Russian).
