Course content
Geography of a small region as a basis for a regional or local analysis. Hierarchical access to studying geographical space; Methods of regional research; Sources of data for a geographic analysis of a small region. Application of statistical information. Materials for a cartographic analysis - basic geographic methods and elaborating map outputs; Defining a region and a geographic location; Assessment of natural differentiation of an area (geological conditions and topography, climatic conditions: temperature, precipitation, weather, hydrological conditions, characteristics of soil, biogeographic characteristics of a small region). Assessment of a landscape application; Analysis of historical development; Population assessment (number of inhabitants and their distribution, biological structure, economic activities, cultural characteristics and movement of population); Settlements and their development (structure of settlements and their urban characteristics, housing stock quality); Analysis of branches of the economy (development and structure of the economy, characteristics of industry, agriculture, forestry and water management, extraction of minerals, labour market analysis); Transport networks and its usage. Transport accessibility; Technical infrastructure: electric wiring network, gas installation, phone installation, water supply and sewerage, sewage treatment plants, waste disposal issues); Social infrastructure assessment (school, medical, cultural and sport facilities); Natural limits and nature conservation, preservation of monuments, landscape planning documentation. Prerequisites for areas to be used in tourism; Selected tools for regulation of the development of a small region (regional politics, programmes of regional support of small and medium sized businesses, programmes of village renewal).
