Course content
Basic concepts on local communities, community (Gemeinschaft), civil society, municipal politics and local governance Composition of the local community - endogenous and exogenous actors, formal and informal, organised and unorganised civil society, conflicts of interest, conflicts The role of traditional associations in rural communities and municipal politics, traditional and (post)modern volunteering, philanthropy Human and social capital at local level, geographical differences in regional comparison across Czechia, mutual trust, bridging and binding ties, excluded localities Outline of historical developments and current trends in local civil society and governance - new public management, community governance, multi-level governance, community decision-making and governance, participation Local democracy, referendums and polls, local elections, symbolic political space Public vs. private interest - NIMBY vs. YIMBY, protest events Methods of conflict resolution in the local community, mediation - roundtables etc. Ways of financing development at local level, effectiveness of local governance and its measurement possibilities Cooperation of communities on local development at micro-regional level - Local Action Groups (LAGs) Availability of social and health and basic commercial services in rural areas and the role of communities, social capital, sharing, credit system of mutual assistance etc. Urban and rural conflicts in a global context, impacts of globalisation, glocalisation, gentrification, "topocide" Influence of information and misinformation, modern technologies (big data, artificial intelligence, social credit system (not only) in authoritarian regimes), local identity, right to the city/place Discussion with an expert practitioner (possibly online)
