Course content
Introduction to the scientific discipline of political and cultural geography - subject and object of study, basic concepts and notions, research paradigms, scientific journals. Methods of political-geographical research - spatial polarization and fragmentation, MAUP, spatial dependence in a multi-scalar context. Macro-regional differentiation of the world according to political, economic and cultural criteria, dependence theories, theory of cyclical development over time and across space. Classical geopolitics - main schools of thought, assumptions, hegemonic-state strategies and geopolitical codes in the 20th and 21st centuries. Critical geopolitics and subaltern studies as a responses to the crisis of classical geopolitics, disputed territories, research methods and main scholars. Geography of conflicts - political, cultural and environmental resources, theory of causes of wars, de iure and de facto states. Modern state - attributes of the state, power and sovereignty, border disputes and perception of borders, orientation at the political map of the world in the 20th and 21st centuries, both historical and contemporary. Forms of the state's constitutional organization, components of the state territory, decentralization, regionalism and role of the geographical organization of society. Nation and nationalism - nations and states, processes of the emergence and formation of nations, typology of nationalism and main scholars of nationalism. National and regional identity - political aspects of spatial identity formation, landscape iconography and construction of national landscapes. Regional nationalism in the context of European integration, practical examples, the concept of Europe of regions and typology of nationalist responses. Electoral geography - electoral systems, spatial context of elections, voter-party-locality relations, contemporary electoral trends. Local politics and conflicts in the global cities - social stratification and spatial segregation, gentrification and its consequences. Environmental political geography - climate change and economic restructuring in institutional and civil politics and policies.
