Course content
Introduction, the theoretical definition of the discipline, subject and object of study, auxiliary sciences, anti-epidemic measures, vaccination, epidemiological surveillance system in the Czech Republic, and repressive measures. Indicators, basic concepts, data sources and methodology. Terminology, determinants of health, geographical aspects as ecological determinants of health. Epidemiological basis, types of epidemiological studies, working with epidemiological data, examples of epidemiological studies, causality, bias and confounding of studies. Infectious diseases - introduction, disease agents, specifics of disease spread, epidemics, pandemics, contagion, and the geographical distribution of infectious diseases. Airborne and alimentary diseases - geographical distribution, historical context, key groups. Sexually transmitted diseases - geographical distribution, data collection, social context, historical framework, key groups. Diseases with parenteral transmission - geographic distribution, historical framework, key groups. Other infectious diseases - geographical distribution, historical framework, key groups. Non-communicable diseases - introduction, determinants of health for non-communicable diseases, diseases of civilisation, healthy lifestyles, and the geographical distribution of non-communicable diseases. Cardiovascular disease is a recent problem in developed countries. NTDs and their potential to replace CVDs. Geography is a tool for epidemiological investigations and understanding disease spread.

Knowledge
Explain the importance of epidemiology and social epidemiology. Think critically about health and health care, their interpretations, developmental crises, and new concepts. Describe the prevalence of infectious and non-infectious diseases worldwide, including identifying significant disparities between these diseases. Describe the main routes of transmission of infectious diseases. Explain the impact of epidemics and pandemics on countries' social, cultural and economic status. Explain the importance of repressive and preventive epidemiological measures, including the importance of vaccination. Identify the determinants of health. Integrate disease incidence issues into the context of geography and global human problems. To review primary methodologies and approaches in epidemiology.
Skills
to process geographic data from a geographic database in the form of graphs and thematic cartography
Analyse the prevalence of the disease in the population. Analyse and interpret the risks associated with the spread of diseases.

Individual presentation at a seminar
The student demonstrates the knowledge acquired in lectures and exercises in a final test and an oral examination. The test and exam can be repeated twice. Extra points from the term paper will be allowed in the final test. In the exercises, students will present the problem they have solved. Students may earn additional points for work in the practicum. The credit test is considered a pass if the student earns a minimum of 75%.
