Course content

1. General introduction to the subject. Introduction to the specific content of the subject, requirements for students and a brief introduction to each other, including their previous work. 2. About type in general. Introduction to the issue of type, theoretical and historical introduction. What is type and why should we study it at all? The theoretical part includes examples of specific historical examples of the use of type, followed by a discussion on the topic. 3. About the book in general and specifically, choice of format, composition of the book. Traditional and less traditional approaches to the book. Options for choosing formats, technological limitations and specifics. Choice of format with regard to the genre of the text - the difference, for example, between a children's book and an educational book. Description of the individual parts of the book. 4. The book and type. The relationship between the development of the book and the development of type - historical context. Introduction to various approaches to type in the creation of a book. 5. Choice of type and classification of type. Selection of suitable types and classification of printing types, combination of types in a book. The relationship between text and image in a book. Discussion of specific examples. 6. Typographic rules and technical elements of typesetting. Students will be reminded of the basic typographic rules that must be followed when working with type. If necessary, the basic principles of working in Adobe InDesign will be briefly repeated. We will also talk about the technical elements of typesetting - bleed, cropping, standard preparation, spine width, cover, number of pages depending on the number of volumes, types of covers on the cover and the possibilities of other modifications such as the use of lamination, embossing, debossing, embossing, etc. 7.-9. Classical approach to book creation and its overlaps, classical book typesetting. In this phase, students learn to work creatively with various typesetting options and typesetting patterns, try out classical typesetting of longer text in confrontation with full-page, half-page and tip illustrations. They become familiar with various options within the classical approach with an emphasis on finding tension, finding new procedures, working with the escape of illustrations from the format, etc. Seminars in this phase mainly include consultations of their own designs in printed form and their modifications. 10.-12. Modern approach to books from modern to the present. Students will be introduced to contemporary approaches to books and important principles within typesetting and will be able to practically try applying these approaches in their own creative way within smaller tasks. They will try out the typesetting of a short text in confrontation with a large illustration - use in so-called Picture Books, where illustration prevails over text. Next, we will go on the path of searching for fonts that match the given illustration style and we will discuss examples of successful publications - domestic and foreign (from the studio archive). Part of our search should also be "going against the grain", searching for unconventional solutions, going beyond and breaking the rules... Seminars in this phase mainly include consultations of their own designs in printed form and their modifications. 13. Finalization of the outputs of their own designs. Students will be guided to gradually finalize their own designs so that they create print outputs that can be presented.
