Course content
1. The book as a phenomenon, different types of book bindings. What is and what is not a book? Traditional and non-traditional forms of books. Different types of book bindings and their specifics. Examples and samples of books, discussions on the topic. 2. Working with handwriting and calligraphy. Samples of handwritten fonts and options for working with your own handwriting and calligraphy. Practical tests of working with lettering, e.g. manually redrawing the font with the possibility of creating new letters or new shapes, monumentalizing the letter, etc. 3. Working with an initial. Blending an illustration with a letter - finding a distinctive composition. Composition of an illustration with a letter/letters - static and dynamic. Further experiments with illustration and lettering, e.g. enlarging, etc. 4. Book cover. Samples of different types of book covers and designs for book cover editions, discussions on the topic. 5. Advanced typesetting tools within the Adobe InDesign program. Brief review of the basic principles of working and using tools in Adobe InDesign (part of other courses) and followed by an introduction to advanced text editing options, e.g. working with a grid within a layout, etc. 6.-8. Working on a joint project - creating a studio artzine. Students will jointly create a design for an artzine (to be specified in the seminar), in which they will use their own illustrations. Work on the artzine will be divided equally between individual students, with the emphasis on cooperation. Students will come up with a concept together, divide their work according to agreement, e.g. into individual components, etc., which they will then connect with a common layout and jointly implement the artzine from concept to output in the form of a mockup. At the beginning, it is necessary to focus on creating a basic concept, finding an appropriate format, creating a typeface and layout; then on choosing a suitable font, its size and other parameters, finding an appropriate relationship between the image and text components, choosing a printing method, paper, etc. Seminars in this phase mainly include consulting on designs in printed form and their modifications. 9.-11. Further work on the joint project - creating a studio artzine. In the next phase, it is necessary to harmonize the individual parts of the artzine as best as possible. Seminars at this stage mainly include consultations on printed designs and their modifications. 12-13. Finalization of the joint project - studio artzine. Finalization of the design, pre-press preparation, actual printing and creation of a mockup
