Course content
1. General introduction to the subject. Introduction to the specific content of the subject, requirements for students and a brief introduction to each other, including their previous work. 2. About type in general. Introduction to the issue of type, theoretical and historical introduction. What is type and why should we study it at all? The theoretical part also includes examples of specific historical examples of the use of type. A discussion on the topic will follow. 3. Book and type, book composition. The relationship between the development of the book and the development of type - historical context. Introduction to various approaches to type within book creation. Traditional and less traditional approaches to the book. Description of individual parts of the book and discussion on the topic. 4. Font selection and font classification. Selection of suitable fonts, classification of printing fonts and font combinations. The relationship between text and image in a book. Discussion on specific examples. 5.-6. Classical and contemporary approach to book creation, book typesetting. Students will practically try working with various typesetting options and creating a typesetting pattern, they will be introduced to classic and contemporary approaches to book creation and will be able to practically try applying these approaches within smaller tasks, mainly when creating pages, double pages or larger book units. Students will also be introduced to the basic typographic rules that must be followed. If necessary, the basic principles of working in Adobe InDesign will be briefly repeated and some more advanced typesetting tools in this program will be shown. 7.-9. Creating your own small-scale book - from concept to design. Students will create a small-scale book in which they will use their own visual material. At the beginning, it is necessary to focus on creating the basic concept of the book, then on finding the appropriate format and binding of the book, finding a suitable typeface, font and its other parameters. Seminars in this phase mainly include consultations on your own designs in printed form and their subsequent modifications. 10.-12. Creating your own small-scale book - from design to implementation. In this phase of preparation, students will mainly deal with completing their own design of the book, proofreading texts and typesetting, creating the introductory and final pages in the book, creating the cover, etc. Seminars in this phase mainly include consultations on their own designs in printed form and their modifications. This phase also includes pre-press preparation. The student will ensure the printing of the book himself. The student should implement the binding of the book in cooperation with the head of the studio. 13. Creating your own small-scale book - from implementation to presentation. The last seminar is intended for the presentation of the book mockup itself.

- drawing principles and construction elements of typefaces, - historical context of the development of typeface creation and Classification of typographic Latin fonts and application of this classification, - important Czech and foreign typeface creators.

- charakterizovat jednotlivá historická období, jmenovat klíčové osobnosti písmové tvorby, - osvojit si klasifikaci konstruovaných písem, při tvorbě užívat konstrukční prvky písmových znaků, - aplikovat základní typografická pravidla, kombinace písem, volit a zapracovat písmo do významově vázaného projektu, - ovládat problematiku sazby, pracovat se sazebním obrazcem v rámci zrcadla.
