Course content
1. Introduction and requirements, sources and literature on the history of the Early and High Middle Ages in Europe, periodization of the Eearly and High Middle Ages in Europe, development, characteristics 2. Decline of the Western Roman Empire and the period of The Migration Period, Germanic tribes - Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Vandals, Langobards, invasion of the Huns, Franks, Slavs 3. The Frankish Empire, its Latin-Roman heritage, its origins, development, peak period and disintegration, Carolingian art, West Francia 4. The East Francia and its struggle with the Great Moravian Empire, the Ottonian dynasty and the rise of the Holy Roman Empire, Ottonian art 5. The Byzantine Empire, origins, peak and decline, art and significance 6. The emergence of Islam, its culture and Arab expansion, European confrontation with Islam, the Crusades, the rise of chivalric orders, the Iberian Peninsula and the reconquista 7. Medieval India and China, Genghis Khan, Kublai Khan - Marco Polo, Mongol expansion 8. The emergence of national monarchies, the emergence and history of France, England, Anglo-French rivalry including the Hundred Years' War, William the Conqueror, Richard I of England, John Lackland 9. The Holy Roman Empire and the Italian states in the High Middle Ages 10. Poland, Hungary, Kievan Rus', Scandinavia, Vikings and Normans 11. The medieval church, the papacy, church administration, East-West Schism, the struggle for investiture, hagiography, Avignon Papacy, Western Schism 12. Medieval European historiography, literature
