Course content
1. Introduction and requirements, sources and literature on the history of the European late Middle Ages and Early modern period, periodization of the late Middle Ages and early modern period, development, characteristics 2. Romanesque art and culture, pilgrimage and relics, Benedictine order, Jews 3. The Cistercian Order and its contribution to the spread of the Gothic style, Gothic art and culture, the rise of the mendicant orders in the 13th century, heretical movements, medieval universities and education 4. History of France after the Hundred Years' War (Charles VII to Louis XIII), French late Gothic, Francis I, Loire Chateaux and French Renaissance culture, Huguenots, St. Bartholomew's Day massacre, Henry IV of France 5. History of England after the Hundred Years' War, the rise of the Tudors and Tudor Gothic, Henry VIII and the Church of England, St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, Mary I. Tudor, Elizabeth I and her time, William Shakespeare, Renaissance England, James VI and I 6. The Holy Roman Empire, Frederick III and Charles the Bold's Burgundy, Maximilian I of Habsburg, the German Peasants' War, the German lands and the Renaissance, Albrecht Dürer, Charles V and the Schmalkaldic War, the Peace of Augsburg 7. Developments in Italy in the 15th and 16th centuries, Papal States, culture and art in Renaissance Italy, the scientific revolution in the 16th-17th centuries, discoveries, inventions, book printing, literature, humanism 8. The rise of Spain, Spanish Renaissance, Portugal, Revolution in the Netherlands, Renaissance in the Low Countries, the end of Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman campaign in Europe 9. Age of Discovery - Portugal, Spain (America, Africa, Asia), great sailors (Diaz, da Gama, Columbus), first voyages around the world (Magellan, Drake), French, Russians, causes, consequences, Pre-Columbian empires, conquest of America, colonialism 10. Outbreak of the European Reformation, Martin Luther and Lutheranism, Müntzer, Calvin, Zwingli and Anabaptism, Scandinavia, Catholic Counter-Reformation, Council of Trent, Jesuits and the birth of the Baroque 11. The Thirty Years' War and its phases, causes, battles, personalities, consequences 12. European historiography - festivals, rituals and courtly everyday life on exemple the Grandes Chroniques de France.

learning outcomes
Knowledge
the essence of great phenomena and the movement from the turn of the Middle Ages and the Early Modernity: Renaissance, Reformation and Overseas Discoveries. It analyzes the basic problems, conflicts and antagonisms between European states as well as between Christian Europe and Islamic civilization, especially with the Ottoman Empire. It will assess the impact of overseas discovery on the economic and cultural transformation of European society. Evaluate the impacts of the development of science and technology on the modernization of the world. He will prove the knowledge of early modern history and its cultural link.
Skills
working with the medieval material and written source, its critical interpretation, application of the theoretical knowledge to the field of practice, argumentation in professional discussion and elementary didactic application of acquired knowledge.
