Course content
1. People's democracy in Czechoslovakia 1945 - 1948. Decrees, postwar purification, retribution, the expulsion of Sudeten Germans. Rise of National Front and its political system. 2. Power collision of non-Communist parties with the Communists in February 1948. 3. Communist terror and murders in 1950s. Concentration camps. 4. Collectivization and the attempted destruction of the Catholic Church. 5. Third (anti-communist) resistance at home and in exile. 6. Monetary Reform and the attempt of rebellion in June 1953. 7. Cosmetic de-Stalinization after the XX. congress of the CPSU. The II. Congress of the Union of Czechoslovak Writers. 8. Economic collapse and attemps of reform in the 1960s: ?Socialism with a human face? - Dubcek and co. The IV. Congress of Czechoslovak Writers. 9. The invasion and occupation in August 1968. 10. Husak and normalization 1969 - 1989. Common life of socialist man. 11. Origins and development of dissident groups in the 1970s. Not only the Charter 77. 12. Breakdown of the communist dictatorship in the years 1985 - 1989. Jakes and co.

Knowledge
Solidly orientated in the world history of the first half of the XX. centuries, to know the history of the First Republic and their relationship to post-war development. Recommended courses in Czechoslovak History 1918 - 1945 and General History (1918 - 1945).
Skills
Critically work with literature, editions of sources, archive materials, memoirs, contemporary press, search for relevant links on the Internet and critically evaluate them.
learning outcomes
Knowledge
Recognize the new direction of post-war Czechoslovakia. Compare "folk" and real democracy. To evaluate the possibilities of non-communist forces in the struggle against the communist dictatorship. Describe methods of communist terror and compare them with methods of national socialism. Clarify the differences between the terror of the 1950s and so-called normalization. Explain the economic, social, cultural and national causes and circumstances of the attempt to reform communism (Prague Spring) and their international context. Describe and exemplify common life for normalization. Justify the domestic and international causes of the fall of the Communist dictatorship.
Skills
to find and use reliable sources of information for creative work, to analyze selected themes from Czechoslovak history from 1945 to 1989, to present the historical development of the period and to write a seminar work on a given topic.
