Course content
1. Masonry structures - basic information and history 2. Basic properties, using masonry structures - bearing walls and non-bearing walls, marking 3. Materials - properties, tests. Masonry units, bricks, stones, blocks, mortars, concrete infill, reinforced steel 4. Mechanical properties and testing - press, bending, shear 5. Process of designing structures by standard ČSN EN 1996 - general rules for reinforced and unreinforced structures 6. Design of masonry structures - ultimate limit states, characteristic strength of masonry 7. Design of structures - loading bearing walls, walls subjected to bending, shear walls 8. Walls - slenderness ratio, idealization of the structure, serviceability limit states, 9. Designing and positioning masonry, temperature changes 10. Simplified calculation method for unreinforced masonry structures 11. Reinforced masonry structures, reinforced units, prestressed masonry 12. Execution of masonry structures - design, principles of execution, joints, chases, recesses 13. Designing of masonry structures fo the effects of fire

Knowledge
The student - distinguishes single vertical load-beraing masonry structures - knows masonry structures and their materials - is able to choose appropriate structure for using in a project and in a site - applies knowledge of the course ZDK to structural design
know and be familiar with the design of a masonry building according to the standard of Eurocode 6
know the distribution of masonry elements and mortars and their impact on the characteristic compressive strength of masonry
know the principles and conditions for the implementation of masonry structures, including areas with the possibility of earthquakes
know the procedures for calculating the load-bearing capacity of masonry in compression, eccentric pressure, shear and bending
Skills
to design the masonry structure of the building
design and assess masonry structures of buildings according to valid standards of Eurocode 6
calculate the vertical compressive strength of masonry for individual materials
define the conditions for the execution of masonry
specify related and system constructions such as lintels, ceilings, wreaths and stiffeners.
