Course content
The subject is inteded for students from faculties of mechanical engineering, applied sciences, and electrical engineering in their second term of master studies. The aim of the programme is to apprise students with characterization methods (especially chemical and partly structural) for characterizing both classic and modern technical materials. The graduates should be able to choose an adequate instrumental method for analysis of materials properties. Aside the global knowledge on principles of measurement devices, the graduates get information on advantages/disadvantages of different methods and their typical applications. Practical information and knowledge are favorized; the analytical methods that are very common and frequently used are taught in more detail. Economy of analytic servises incl. instrumentation costs and costs of operation are also mentioned. At the conclusion of the subject excursion into modern commercial laboratories is envisaged.

Knowledge
Student will be educated in methods of characterizing different materials by means of wide range of moder instrumental methods. This enables him to choose the proper method for checking/determining the material structure, to interprete generally the results of measurements (e.g. spectra reeading), and to assign the proper structure to metallic, inorganic, and organic matters.
Skills
Students master the skills needed for instrumental work with microscopic and spectroscopic methods.
