Course content
Introduction to study of macrostructure and microstructure of metal materials. Principles of light microscopy. Preparation of metallographic samples. Different methods of optical imaging using light microscopy. Quantitative metallography and image analysis. Utilization of electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction phase analysis for material expertises. Lecture topics: 1.Organization stuff, repetition test, introduction to metallography and examples of possible analyzes incl. solved analyzes. 2.Preparation of metallographic cut I. 3.Preparation of metallographic cut II. 4.Macroscopic testing. 5.Metalography of alloys in accordance with metastable Fe-Fe3C diagram and Fe-C stable diagram. 6. Physical fundamentals of light microscopy. 7.Metalographic microscope I. 8. Metallographic microscope II. 9.Methods of imaging in metallographic microscope. 10.Metalographic analyzes. 11. Basics of image analysis I. 12.Basic image analysis II. 13.Basics of electron microscopy.

describe the structure of atom and atomic bonds the student is familiar with crystallographic structure of materials understands the principles of and can construct binary phase diagrams, has a grasp of structural metallic and non-metallic materials used in mechanical engineering the student understands strengthening processes in materials and is familiar with the following concepts: precipitation hardening, dispersion strengthening, primary carbide, secondary carbide, phase transformation, substitutional and interstitial strengthening

familiar with basic handling of chemical substances can work in a fume hood, do pipetting and mix different chemical substances

Knowledge
can give description of optical microscope and scanning electron microscope can outline the principles and methods of imaging can describe the structure of ordinary structural materials and predict the resulting mechanical properties and hardness of a material
Skills
It independently and safely controls the preparation of metallographic cuts, including etching. It analyzes independently according to valid directives and standards (inspection of welded joints, internal defects, microcleanness, grain size, cementation layer depth, microhardness).
