Course content
1. Opening discussion, "national" features and stereotypes 2. German settlement in the Czech countries in the Middle Age and Early Modern era; Czech state relation to the Holy Roman Empire 3. Land and language conception of the nation, so called "Spring of Nations" 4. Czech National Revival; goals of the German national movement and the attitude of the Austria-Hungary 5. Czech-German rivalry during the 2nd half of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century 6. Czechoslovakia formation, the idea of czechoslovakism, attitude of Germans towards the new state, so called Gentlemen's coalition 7. Escalation during the economic crisis, formation and success of the Sudeten German Party, way to the Munich Agreement 8. Life in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and Sudeten district; collaboration, resistance and the "silent majority" 9. Expulsion of German inhabitants, so called Beneš decrees, most famous excesses, exceptions from the expulsion 10. Sudeten Germans integration within both German states; their organization and program 11. New settlement of the frontier area, reemigration, attitude towards the (remaining) German minority 12. Czech-German declaration after the fall of communism and the unification of Germany, Czech Republic joining the EU, Sudeten German "card" in the presidential elections of 2013, role of citizens' initiatives, Czech(Sudeten)German relations on the local level 13.
