Course content
Importance of presence and care provided by a close person; ethical issues of care for one´s relatives in serious health conditions. Psychology of illness, psychology of pain. Family and physical illness. Family and mental illness. Family with a handicapped member. Family with a member dependant on alcohol or drugs. Accompanying a person in a terminal life stage, dying. Feelings and needs of a caring person. Principles of self-care. Supervision for care-givers. Analysis of case studies from practice.

General knowledge of the psychology of medical activity.
learning outcomes
Students will know basic family care for patients with a physical or mental condition; they will be able to use techniques to promote the health of a care-giver and self-care techniques. Students can identify needs of lay family care-givers and in specific cases, they can identify the load and stress levels involved, and propose possible solutions.
