Course content
Lectures: 1. Pychology in health care - definition of the term, application of psychology in health care, the issue of illness, personality of rescuers, professional prerequisites. Autoplastic picture of illness, patient's attitude to illness. 2. Psychological response to the dinase - patients in pre-hospital care, extraordinary event , prevention of mass panic, phases of disaster in the community. 3. The issue of fear and anxiety - definition of basic concepts, primary symptom, physical manifestations, development of anxiety and fear, psychological approaches to deal with patients in fear and anxiety. 4. The issue of pain - WHO definition, types of pain, acute pain, chronic pain, pain in children, psychological procedures, pain therapy, myths about child pain, pain measurement. 5. Aggression in medical practice. 6. Meeting with death, M.K.Ross - reaction to infaust prognosis. 7. Communication in pre-hospital care, specific types of communication - communication with the child, with the handicapped, with the geriatric patient 8. Difficult life situations - Stress (stages, stressors, coping mechanisms), acute stress response, post-traumatic stress disorder. Frustration, deprivation, conflict 9. Crisis intervention, psychological first aid, supportive interview, suicide. 10. Burnout, psychohygiene. Exercises: 1.-2. Comparison of the mental situation of a healthy and sick person. Model situations - attitude to illness. 3.-4. Communication skills in health care - verbal and nonverbal communication in health practice, interview with a patient of different ages (senior, child), relatives. 5.-6. Practice of communication between dispatching and caller, between rescuer and patient, communication with family members, with witness the event. 7.-8. Subjective experiencing of pain, psychological means to reduce pain, fear and anxiety. 9.-10. Practicing communication with the patient with impaired hearing, vision, speech disorder, MR. 11.-12. Diagnosis of burnout. How to prevent burnout. Relaxation.

- explain the psychological responses to disease and death in the context of difficult life situations,
- characterize the issue of pain, fear and anxiety in the patient and adequate attitudes of the health care professional,
- define and describe burnout syndrome,
- describe the symptoms of acute stress reaction,
- clarify the issue of post-traumatic stress disorder,
- characterize crisis intervention and psychological first aid.
