Course content
|
1. Literary Texts in Foreign Language Instruction: Objectives of the CourseLanguage and Personal Development, Intercultural Understanding. Reading Literacy and the Promotion of Reading. Criteria for Selecting Literary Texts with Regard to Students' Age, Language Proficiency, and Motivation. 2. Literary Texts in Teaching Materials. Genres and text types used in Russian language instruction. The literary canon and working with key excerpts. Adapted texts and authentic literary texts. 3. Home and field reading, reading workshops. Basic principles of working with literary texts in foreign language instruction. Development of speech activities and specific language skills. 4. Pre-text work with literary texts. Activating prior knowledge, motivation, and anticipation. Working with the title, illustrations, cover, and other paratexts. The book as an aesthetic artifact. 5. Presentation of selected texts and discussion of the criteria for their selection. Linguistic and content difficulty, length, students' age and interests, educational goals, and cross-curricular themes. 6. Use of literary texts in developing pronunciation, phonetic skills, and reinforcing grammatical concepts. 7. Expanding, practicing, and organizing vocabulary. Lexical work with literary texts and ways to link it to comprehension and interpretation. 8. Receptive language activities: reading and listening comprehension when working with literary texts. Various reading methods and strategies. Methods for visualizing and structuring information from the text. 9. Productive language activities: speaking and writing in connection with literary texts. Reading and creative writing. Creating original texts. 10. Creative work and transformation of literary texts: dramatization, recitation, illustration, comics, storytelling, book trailers, and other methods. 11. Literary texts as a means of personal and intercultural development: experiential reading. Aesthetic and sensory perception of literary texts; development of emotionality, imagination, figurative thinking, and empathy. An intercultural approach to working with literary texts. 12. Presentation of Students' Own Teaching Outputs I: working with selected literary texts and teaching demonstrations. Joint reflection and discussion. 13. Presentation of Students' Own Teaching Outputs II: working with selected literary texts and teaching demonstrations. Final reflection on the possibilities of using literature in teaching Russian as a foreign language.
