Course content
1.Periodization of the literature of the 19th century in terms of historical, cultural and social context. 2.Characteristics of literary movements (sentimentalism, romanticism, critical realism), genre evolution, relationship between prose and poetry. Satire and psychology in the development of Russian literature and their main representatives. 3.Specific features of the development of Russian literature in the context of European literature. 4.Representatives of Russian sentimentalism and romanticism (Zhukovsky, Pushkin, Lermontov, Gogol). 5.Characteristics of the literature of the 30s and 40s, beginnings of the critical realism (Turgenev). 6.Satire in the literature of the 19th century (Gogol, Saltykov-Shchedrin, Chekhov). 7.N.Nekrasov?s works. 8.Main representatives of Russian critical realism. L.N.Tolstoy?s works. 9.F.N. Dostoyevsky?s works. 10.Drama in Russian literature of the 19th century (Gogol, Chekhov). 11.A.P.Chekhov?s works. 12.Characteristics of the ?Silver Age? period ? the 90s of the 19th century ? the 10s of the 20th century, modernist movements ? symbolism, futurism, akmeism, imazhinism. Students will present one read literary work in seminars (commented reading).
