Course content
Visual ethnography and visual anthropology: theory, methods, topics, issues. Interpretation of the forms of visualisations in different social, cultural, historical and political contexts. Audio-visual technology as part of social science research methods. Ethnographic film and ethnographic photograph (according to the preferences of the students, it is possible to focus the course either on a historical or theoretical overview of ethnographic filmmaking, or on practical production of ethnographic film).

learning outcomes
Students will be able to: - apply current theories of sign to the field of audiovisual communication; - clarify ideas of researchers working in the field of visual anthropology, and apply them in the context of their own research or research project; - critically consider ways of using photography and film in classic and contemporary anthropology; - use a photograph or film in the context of field research as a tool for anthropological interpretation of cultural and social conditions for participants' behaviour; - use specialized software aids in the processing of audiovisual material for presentation purposes (e.g. editing) and for analysis (e.g. evaluation of audiovisual data); - interpret socially shared patterns of behavior through a quantitative and qualitative analysis of visual manifestations of the society observed, and then use relevant software tools in the analysis.
