Course content
Lectures: 01) Roots of Modernism in 19th Century Industrial Architecture - Gottfried Semper - Chicago School - Garden City 02) Art Nouveau - from Art Nouveau to modernity (pioneers of modernity) 03) Cubism - expressionism - decorativism - national style - art deco 04) Avant-garde (futurism, neoplasticism) - revolutionary architecture - socialist realism - turn to tradition 05) Purism - new objectivity - functionalism (international style) 06) Czechoslovakia: modernism and other vectors 07) Modernism for export (development of international style in the USA, Australia or New Zealand) - Nordic alternative - freer forms - Brussels 08) Revision of modernism - new brutalism - structuralism - phenomenology 09) Technology, construction, utopia: Prouvé - Fuller - Archigram - machinism - high-tech - 10) Deconstructivism - postmodernism 11) Minimalism - critical regionalism - sustainability 12) The current Czech scene and the challenges facing it 13) Excursion (tour of the new permanent exhibition 1956-1989: Architecture for all in the National Gallery) Seminar: The content of the seminars will be: 1) joint guided walks and tours of buildings in Pilsen (6 events) 2) presentation of selected topics supplementing and deepening the topics of the lectures and subsequent discussion (each student will present one topic/personality/work during the semester, possibly also in the form of a report as part of commented walks) 3) discussion of topics from assigned texts (2 texts during the semester) 4) discussion of topics from screenings and documents (2 shorter screenings during the semester)

Basic knowledge of general history at the level of general secondary education.
acquire basic knowledge about architecture acquired in various fields of previous study, on a basic level, compare and analyze different forms of architecture from the aesthetic, semiotic and technical point of view, specify basic knowledge from supporting artistic disciplines, describe the main visual and stylistic canons within the development of visual and applied arts
Skills
work systematically in relation to seminar work or own learning, show an interest in own theoretical learning in relation to issues that can be used in one's own practice, master basic strategies for working with field facts, operationalization and thematization of field terms and phenomena, work independently and actively and flexibly respond to the teacher's evaluative comments
