1. Introduction to the course. 2. From scrolls to codices: changes in the form and function of the book from antiquity to the early Middle Ages. 3. Sacred text and its image: the aesthetics and function of illumination in Christian manuscripts. 4. Printing and its impact: the development of book production and changes in illustration. 5. Prominent figures in Czech and world graphic arts. 6. The book and craftsmanship: medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque bookbinding. 7. The 19thcentury book: techniques, aesthetics, and changes in reading habits. 8. The book as an art object on the threshold of modernity: the Arts and Crafts movement, Art Nouveau. 9. Art Nouveau, symbolism, and decadence in Bohemia. 10. Books for children and young adults and their specific characteristics. 11. From encyclopedias to scientific illustration: transformations in the visualization of knowledge. 12. Spaces of memory: libraries, archives, collections. 13. Summary, review.
